Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will launch its Smartphone Link Display Audio (SDA) system this summer in Europe on its Pajero flagship SUV (sold as the Montero or Shogun in some markets).

MMC will extend the technology, which can interface with either Apple Inc.'s CarPlay or Google Inc.'s Android Auto connectivity systems, to other models and markets later.

The SDA system allows iPhones and Android smartphones to connect to the dashboard display using a USB cable. Users can then access such smartphone features as hands-free phone calls, voice controlled text messaging, music and navigation features, via the vehicle's center stack touchscreen or voice prompts.

Several other automakers are launching similar systems. To date, Android Auto is limited to the 2015 Sonata, and CarPlay is available only in Ferrari supercars.

General Motors Co. said last week it will offer both platforms across its Chevrolet lineup. Google lists upcoming Android Auto applications with about two dozen automakers, and Apple expects Mercedes-Benz and Volvo to soon adopt CarPlay.
