Michigan is poised to become the fourth state after California, Florida and Nevada to permit autonomous vehicles on public roadways.

The state's legislature passed the law late last week. Gov. Rick Snyder, a vocal proponent of advanced vehicle technologies, is certain to sign the measure.

Michigan's law will require self-driving cars to have an operator on board who can take control of the vehicle if necessary. The measure specifies that such vehicles must display a "manufacturer" license plate. The law also shields a carmaker from civil liability for damage inflicted by its autonomous vehicles.
