Michelin & Cie. unveiled its Visionary Concept tire at this week’s Movin’ On sustainable mobility conference in Montreal.
Made of recyclable biodegradable materials, the tire features an integrated wheel and run-flat tread. The latter can be quickly produced via a 3D printer that would allow motorists to swap out or reconfigure tires for different driving conditions prior to taking a trip, Michelin says.
The tire’s durability is attributed to a honeycomb design inspired by coral and other natural-forming structures. Embedded sensors provide real-time information about tread life and other operating conditions.
Michelin describes the concept as long-term vision with no immediate plans to produce the tire as a complete system. But the company notes that all of the component technologies are being developed separately under various research initiatives.
