Mercedes Will Launch Ride-Hailing Service at BASF Campus

Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz Vans unit has partnered with BASF SE to develop mobility programs for the chemical giant, starting with a ride-sharing service for BASF employees at the company’s campus in Ludwigshafen, Germany.
The service will be operated and provided by ViaVan Technologies B.V., a joint venture formed last December by between Mercedes and New York City-based startup Via Transportation Inc. Employees and guests will be able to book shuttle vans via a smartphone app.
An algorithm developed by Via is used to optimize trips that involve multiple riders, locations and destinations. The service is meant to supplement existing bus service between various buildings at the site.
Mercedes and BASF also plan to work together to test unspecified electric mobility, digitalization and autonomous driving projects.
ViaVan launched ride-sharing services in Amsterdam, Berlin and London earlier this year. BASF’s plant in Ludwigshafen is the first industrial site to use the system.
