Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche tells reporters at the Frankfurt auto show the company's Mercedes-Benz Cars unit would consider an alliance with rivals Audi and BMW to make next-generation batteries for hybrid and all-electric vehicles.

Zetsche points to a potential partnership akin to one formed last month among the three companies when they agreed to spend €2.8 billion to acquire Nokia Corp.'s Here precision mapping business. The deal is expected to be finalized in early 2016.

The companies teamed to buy Here to protect the independence of their upcoming connectivity and autonomous vehicle systems and related products. Zetsche says a similar approach to battery manufacturing might make sense because of "commonalities" among German carmakers.
