Mazda Motor Co. is calling back 130,000 diesel-powered vehicles in Japan that can clog with soot and fail.

The country’s transport ministry tells Bloomberg News the affected models include CX-3 crossover vehicles and Demio (Mazda2) and Axela (Mazda3) small cars.

The flaw causes soot buildup on the exhaust valves that can increase operating roughness and noise before causing engine failure. Dealers will adjust the engine control software to eliminate the problem.
