India’s ban in January on diesel engines that displace more than 2 liters has prompted SUV specialist Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. to announce it will offer a gasoline engine option throughout its lineup by 2018.
Mahindra says it is developing a 1.5-liter gasoline engine to supplement the 1.2- and 2.0-liter units it offers in many models now.
Since the diesel ban began in January, India’s passenger vehicle market mix has swung from 44% diesel and 56% gasoline to 41% and 59%, respectively, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
Mahindra plans to work with South Korean affiliate SsangYong Motor Co. to develop next-generation models for the Indian market, the Financial Express notes. Earlier this year Mahindra dropped plans to introduce the SsangYong brand in the U.S. and focus on expanding the marque in China instead.
