Ride-hailing service Lyft Inc. and autonomous-car startup NuTonomy Inc. hope within a few months to begin giving rides in self-driving cars to Lyft customers in Boston.
The pilot project aims initially to study human interactions with autonomous driving technologies. Lyft CEO Logan Green tells reporters the program could lead to “thousands” of Lyft cars equipped to be controlled by NuTonomy’s software.
The test in Boston will use Renault Zoe electric cars operated in automatic mode by NuTonomy’s technology. The startup is already testing its system in certain Boston neighborhoods and in Singapore.
Separately, Lyft is collaborating with General Motors Co. to launch a fleet of autonomous EVs next year. The ride-hailing company also agreed last month to launch a test program with Google Inc.’s Waymo autonomous-car unit.
