Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. has developed a specially equipped version of the Range Rover SUV that allows a small flying reconnaissance drone to take off and land on its roof—even when the vehicle is moving—to support Red Cross rescue operations in Austria.
Developed by Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), the system uses self-centering and magnetic retention technology that allows the drone to land while the vehicle is in motion. The carmaker describes the technology as an industry first.
The drone can carry 5,500 grams of weight, including batteries and sensors, and can fly for 20 minutes. From the air, the drone can send live footage of a distressed area so rescue teams can respond faster and more effectively to natural disasters and other emergency situations.
The so-called Project Hero Discovery also features a removable rear floor section that can be used as a mobile work surface. The vehicle also has additional exterior lights, multiple radio systems and electrical ports to support different regional standards.
The Red Cross will deploy Project Hero in June for a year-long test program.
