Kia Recalls SUV to Replace Brake Pedal Mounts

Kia Motors Corp. is recalling 21,900 of its 2009 model Borrego SUVs with non-adjustable brake pedal assemblies to replace plastic mounts that could break in a moderate crash. The campaign does not involve SUVs fitted with adjustable pedals.
The high-strength plastic mounts were designed to break in certain severe collisions to protect the driver's leg.
But Kia says some of the mounts were made with less sturdy fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Those mounts could break in milder crashes, in which the vehicle continued to roll. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the driver would then need to use the parking brake to avoid a second impact and possible injury.
