JLR: No Decision on U.S. Plant for at Least 3 Years
Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. believes it needs an assembly plant in the U.S. to stay competitive, Automotive News reports.
Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. believes it needs an assembly plant in the U.S. to stay competitive, Automotive News reports.
But CEO Ralf Speth rules out a decision on such a facility until at least 2018 because the company lacks sufficient volume to justify the cost.
Last year JLR sold 67,200 vehicles in the U.S. Its most popular model, the Range Rover Sport, accounted for only 17,900 of the total. Speth says the company needs to generate sales of at least 30,000 units for one model to support an American factory. He says the company does not want to export large numbers of SUVs from the U.S.
British media reports last October said JLR was in talks with several states in the southern U.S. about factory sites.
