Tata Motors Ltd.'s Jaguar Land Rover unit may hire 800 new workers at its assembly plant in Solihull, England, to keep pace with demand in China, Russia and the U.S., according to Reuters.
But Honda Motor Co. plans to shed 800 of the 3,500 jobs at its factory in Swindon, England because of sluggish sales in Europe. The company's volume across Europe fell 6% to 131,300 vehicles in January-November 2012, according to industry group ACEA.
Honda says it will consult its U.K. unions over the next three months and hopes to avoid compulsory job cuts.
The Swindon facility, which produces the Civic and Jazz small cars and CR-V small crossover vehicle, added 500 workers a year ago, according to BBC News. But the plant, which has annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles, built only 166,000 vehicles in 2012.
