JLR Considers an Assembly Plant for Saudi Arabia
Tata Motors Ltd.'s Jaguar Land Rover unit says it will conduct a feasibility study for an assembly plant in Saudi Arabia.
Tata Motors Ltd.'s Jaguar Land Rover unit says it will conduct a feasibility study for an assembly plant in Saudi Arabia. If the analysis is positive, the company plans to sign a memorandum of understanding next year to build the facility.
Reuters cites Saudi Arabian officials who say the $1.2 billion complex would have capacity to make 50,000 Land Rover SUVs annually beginning in 2017. Those sources say JLR would probably erect the factory in Yanbu.
The British carmaker also says it considers Saudi Arabia a potential base for making aluminum components. Saudi Arabia has no auto industry but wants to expand its non-oil industrial base.
JLR also assembles the Land Rover Freelander SUV in India and expects to open a similar operation in Changsu, China, with partner Chery Automobile Co. in 2014. The $1.7 billion Chinese operation will have annual capacity of 130,000 Land Rover and Jaguar models.
