Johnson Controls Inc. will use next week's Detroit auto show to unveil a new 12-volt battery designed to support advanced engine stop-start features in piston-powered vehicles.
The new system consists of two batteries, one with conventional chemistry and one using llithium titanate. JCI estimates that the combination, used in conjunction with a start-stop system, can improve fuel efficiency as much as 8%.
JCI partnered with Toshiba Corp., a leader in lithium titanate batteries, to develop the tandem unit. They plan to commercialize the design in 2018.
One of the system's batteries uses JCI's absorbent glass matt or enhanced flooded battery architecture. It is used to start the vehicle's engine and power the accessories. The second unit, employed to store energy captures by the vehicle's regenerative braking system, features a lithium titanate chemistry. JCI says the latter chemistry is especially well suited for rapid charging across a broad range of ambient temperatures.
