Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says the country's government will offer subsidies of at least 2 million yen ($19,800) to buyers of fuel cell-powered cars.
Such hydrogen-fueled vehicles are expected to retail for about 7 million yen ($69,100). Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. both plans to introduce cars in Japan with fuel-cell systems next year.
Abe also vows to bolster the fledging market for such vehicles by fostering their purchase by government agencies. Fuel-cell vehicles promise zero emissions with refueling speed and driving range akin to gasoline-powered cars.
