Rupert Stadler, the Audi CEO arrested in June on charges of tampering with evidence about diesel emission cheating, lost an appeal to be released on bail.
A district court in Munich rejected Stadler’s petition, citing the “urgent” nature of the fraud charges. Prosecutors say they arrested Stadler on June 18 to prevent him from interfering with their investigation of the Volkswagen cheating scandal.
Stadler is accused of knowingly allowing the sale of diesel-powered Audi vehicles that had been rigged with software to evade emission laws.
VW intends to replace Stadler as CEO with Markus Duesmann, currently head of purchasing at BMW AG, on Jan. 1. Until then, Audi sales and marketing chief Bram Schot has been filling in as interim CEO.
