Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. says its upcoming I-Pace electric crossover vehicle will have a pre-conditioning system that will allow users to warm or cool the battery pack—if the vehicle is plugged into an electrical outlet—before use to ensure driving range and performance are optimized in extreme temperature conditions.
The carmaker recently completed tests of the I-Pace at its facility in Arjeplog, Sweden, in temperatures as low as -40˚F. Such extreme cold can severely impede battery performance.
Jaguar says the 90-kWh battery can be replenished to 80% capacity in less than 45 minutes via a 100-kW DC charger. With a fully charged battery, the vehicle will have an estimated driving range of 220 miles.
The I-Pace’s twin electric motors can generate a combined 400 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Jaguar says the vehicle can sprint from zero to 60 mph in about four seconds.
