Irvine, Calif.-based ITT Inc. says its new Cannon DC charging system can recharge a lithium-ion battery in less than five minutes and extend an electric vehicle’s driving range by as much as 60 miles.
The ultra-fast charge cycles are enabled by a new liquid-cooled connector and special cable design, according to ITT. A dielectric cooling liquid runs from the cable throughout the connector’s contact system to allow for a high power density.
The AC contact system also was improved to minimize power losses and improve durability. Enhancements include more precise canted coil springs to help reduce mechanical stress, reduced charge resistance and improved alignment.
ITT plans to demonstrate the technology next week at the eCarTec conference in Munich.
