Italy’s antitrust authority has fined Volkswagen AG €5 million ($5.5 million) for misleading customers about the company’s diesel emissions, Reuters reports. The fine is the maximum the agency is permitted to levy.
VW says it will fight the fine in an administrative court. The company insists it has “fully cooperated with the utmost openness and transparency” about using secret software to rig 8.5 million diesels in Europe to evade the region’s emission standards.
VW is in the process of recalling and upgrading affected 2.0-liter diesels in Europe. Repairs have been approved for roughly 3.7 million engines to date.
