Italy’s transport minister says government tests confirm no diesel-powered Fiat cars made in the country have been equipped to cheat emission rules.
Minister Graziano Delrio told a meeting of his peers earlier Tuesday the only illegal defeat devices his department found are “those already identified on Volkswagen cars.”
Tests in Germany last month suggested several carmakers, including Fiat, were manipulating emission data for diesels. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV refused to meet with Germany transport ministry two weeks ago, correctly pointing out that European Union-wide emission approvals for its vehicles are the responsibility of Italian authorities.
Delrio suggested at the time that any concerns about compliance should be handled among national ministries and not by contacting targeted companies directly. Germany didn't dispute the procedure but says it was surprised by FCA’s refusal to cooperate, according to The Wall Street Journal.
