An Italian appeals court has agreed to hear a class-action lawsuit that claims Volkswagen AG exaggerated the fuel rating of its diesel-powered Golf hatchback.
Last year VW admitted cheating on economy ratings over the past two years for as many as 800,000 of its cars, most of them diesels in Europe. The issue is unrelated to VW’s diesel emission cheating scandal.
The original complaint, which had been rejected by a lower court, was filed two years ago, Reuters reports. Altroconsumo, an Italian consumer advocate group, says its tests of a Golf equipped with a 1.6-liter diesel engine found carbon dioxide emissions 50% greater than government standards allow. CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency are inversely related.
Altroconsumo is asking the court to order VW to pay each affected owner €500 ($560) in compensation. Reuters notes the group is pursuing a similar lass action lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV.
