The state of Iowa plans to roll out a mobile app next year that substitutes for the usual plastic driver's license, The Des Moines Register reports.
Iowa's Dept. of Transportation outlined the plan in a state agency budget hearing earlier this week.
The free app requires a personal ID code to display the license. Iowa says the digital rendition will be accepted by police officers during traffic stops and at airport identification screening at the state's airports.
The digital license will be optional, according to the DOT. It says even those who have one can continue to carry a traditional plastic license too.
