India says tests show that some of Volkswagen AG’s diesel-powered vehicles emit as much as nine times the country’s allowable limit for oxides of nitrogen.
The tests were conducted late last year at the request of the heavy industries ministry by the Automotive Research Authority of India. The ministry says the evaluated vehicles met VW’s factory tests but failed ARAI’s on-road tests. It will now be the decision of India’s transport ministry whether to take punitive action, according to the agency.
VW acknowledges it equipped 11 million diesels worldwide with software to evade emission standards. In December the company announced it would recall 323,700 of its diesel-equipped Audi, Skoda and VW models in India to update their engine control software.
