Hyundai Motor Co. and its Kia Motors unit tell reporters they will introduce as many as 38 new hybrid, all-electric or fuel cell-powered cars and crossovers by 2025.

The companies, which analysts say have lagged competitors in electrifi cation, currently offer two fully electric cars, the Hyundai Ioniq sedan and Kia Soul MPV, along with a fuel cell-equipped version of the Hyundai Tucson crossover vehicle (pictured).

Upcoming EVs include a battery-powered Kona crossover vehicle due in 2018 and an electric version of a Genesis luxury model due about three years later.

Hyundai tells reporters that it, like Toyota Motor Corp., believes hydrogen fuel cells are the ultimate propulsion system for cars. But the company acknowledges that battery-powered vehicles are a more immediate, higher-volume bet.
