Hyundai Mobis Targets Autonomous Vehicle Sensors

Hyundai Mobis Co. is developing several sensor technologies for autonomous vehicle systems.
The supplier says it aims to begin selling the new sensors by 2020. To support the initiative, Hyundai Mobis plans to increase its research and development budget to 10% of its sales by 2021 from about 7% today. The company also will expand its r&d team from 600 people to 1,000 over that time.
Hyundai Mobis has separate partnerships with Germany’s Astyx Communication & Sensors and Smart Microwave Sensors (SMS) to develop next-generation radar systems. Those programs are expected to yield prototype radar technologies by year-end and commercial applications by 2021.
The ASTYX partnership will focus on high-performance front radar systems, while the SMS system is targeting entry-level front and side radar. Hyundai Mobis also is developing radar systems with Seoul National University.
The new radar sensors will feature an integrated chip design that reduces cost and improves resolution, according to Hyundai Mobis. The company, which also is developing next-generation camera and lidar sensors, will test the technologies at the proving ground it opened last summer in Seosan, South Korea.
In addition to sensor systems, Hyundai Mobis plans to increase its investment by 50% in information and communication technologies for autonomous vehicles in coming years. Other focus areas include advanced identification systems that incorporate artificial intelligence and deep learning.RELATED CONTENT
