Hyundai Bans New Factories to Focus on Quality
Hyundai Motor Co.
Hyundai Motor Co. Chairman Chung Mong-koo has told top executives that the company does not need to build more domestic or overseas assembly plants beyond those already planned, according to news reports.
Chung said producing 8 million vehicles, as Hyundai plans to do when its current construction is completed, will be enough. He declared the company was already seeing signs of growing pains. Chung directed managers to shift their focus to improving vehicle quality.
Hyundai runs a round-the-clock "quality situation room" at its Seoul headquarters to collect reports of problems and direct them to the appropriate staff, according to Reuters. The news service says Chung, who has championed higher quality since 2000, holds twice-monthly meetings with top managers to discuss the topic.
