Honda Opens Plant in Thailand at Half Capacity
Honda Motor Co. has opened an assembly plant in Prachinburi, Thailand, to make Civic small sedans.
Honda Motor Co. has opened an assembly plant in Prachinburi, Thailand, to make Civic small sedans. But the company says it will operate the facility at half its 120,000-unit capacity because of the country’s sluggish car market.
Honda began construction on the 17.2 billion-baht ($489 million) factory in 2013 and planned to open it about a year ago. The plant, which includes engine assembly, features Honda’s latest flexible manufacturing system.
The Prachinburi facility joins a second Honda Thai plant in Ayutthaya that makes the Accord, Brio, City, Civic, CR-V and Jazz.
Honda anticipates Civic sales of 25,000 units in Thailand this year, according to The Nikkei. The newspaper says Honda will export the balance of the new factory’s output to Asia-Pacific markets, including Australia.
