Honda Confirms Talks with GM About Fuel Cell Production

CEO Takahiro Hachigo says Honda Motor Co. is in talks with General Motors Co. about jointly buying and making components to build fuel cells for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
The companies have been collaborating on fuel-cell research since 2013. Last year they said their efforts already had reduced the size and weight of their first-generation fuel-cell design by about half. They also lowered the amount of costly platinum required by one-third.
In January the Asahi Shimbun reported the two companies were considering a plan to jointly operate a factory to make fuel cells. GM and Honda have set goals of mass-producing fuel-cell vehicles within 10 years.
Hachigo’s assertion earlier today come as Honda begins limited production of its Clarity fuel-cell car. GM has been testing fuel cells for several years but has not indicated when it will offer the technology to the public.
