Honda Motor Co. says its 2017 fuel-cell-powered Clarity sedan has a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rating of 68 mpg and a driving range of 366 miles. The latter is an industry best for any fuel cell or pure electric vehicle in the U.S., according to the carmaker.
The 2017 Clarity’s fuel cell stack is 33% more compact with a 60% increase in power density than the outgoing Honda FCX Clarity, which Honda has leased in limited volumes since 2008. That vehicle had a driving range of 240 miles.
Honda says the new model’s integrated fuel cell stack and batteries fits entirely under the hood of the car, providing a more spacious cabin with seating for five people. The vehicle’s hydrogen tank can be refueled in less than five minutes.
Honda will introduce the 2017 Clarity later this year at 12 dealerships in California.
