Honda Breaks Ground for Second Malaysia Plant
Honda Motor Co. has begun construction of a second assembly line at its existing plant in Malacca, Malaysia, which will double annual capacity at the complex to 100,000 vehicles by the end of next year.
Honda Motor Co. has begun construction of a second assembly line at its existing plant in Malacca, Malaysia, which will double annual capacity at the complex to 100,000 vehicles by the end of next year.
The new 350 million-ringgit ($111 million) line will produce a hybrid version of the Jazz subcompact car (known as the Fit in Japan and the U.S.) and other small vehicles. Honda plans to hire about 700 workers for the expanded operation.
Malaysia is the company's largest hybrid vehicle market in southeast Asia. Honda says it will start making the Jazz hybrid on its existing line in Malacca, which began building the latest-generation Civic compact hatchback last week. Hybrid production will shift to the new line when it opens.
