Carmakers can expect U.S. guidelines within a few months for technologies that enable autonomous vehicles, says Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

He tells a Bloomberg breakfast meeting in Washington, D.C., that guidelines—but not formal rules—will begin flowing from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by late spring.

Foxx acknowledges that government rulemaking can't keep pace with emerging technologies for self-driving cars. But he says the dialog between regulators and the transport industry is preparing NHTSA to create more effective standards eventually.

Bloomberg News notes that DOT has proposed a 10-year, $4 billion grant program to help developers and local governments validate technologies that enable automatic vehicles. But Foxx says the plan's reception on Capitol Hill has been “a little frosty."
