General Motors Co. plans to spend $35 million to prepare its Hamtramck, Mich., assembly plant to begin producing the Cadillac ELR extended-range hybrid coupe late next year.
The ELR will use a variation of the powertrain used in the Chevrolet Volt plug-in sedan made at the Hamtramck factory. The facility also builds the Opel Ampera variant of the Volt and is adding a version for GM's Holden unit in Australia.
GM showed the concept version of the ELR, called the Converj, at the Detroit auto show in 2009. The company hints that it may reveal the production version of the Cadillac at the Detroit show in January.
