General Motors Co.'s Opel unit confirms it will begin making the Mokka small SUV at its underutilized plant in Zaragoza, Spain, in the second half of 2014.
The arrangement will help embattled Opel boost its capacity utilization and meet demands from Spanish officials and unions to preserve the 5,800 jobs at the Zaragoza factory.
The Mokka, which was introduced in Europe a year ago, has been produced exclusively at GM's factory in Pupyong, South Korea. That facility will continue to supply the vehicle to Europe.
The Pupyong plant will expand its SUV capacity by an unspecified amount and also begin supplying Zaragoza with Mokka kits for final assembly, according to GM. The Spanish plant currently builds the Opel Corsa supermini and Meriva minivan.
The company says increased global output of the Mokka will help Opel meet strong European demand for the model.
