General Motors Co. has asked the Canadian Auto Workers union to open contract negotiations at its assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont., about six months early, according to CAW officials.
The facility's CAW accord doesn't expire until September. But GM is considering whether to continue building the Chevrolet Equinox crossover vehicle in Ingersoll when the next-generation model arrives in 2015.
Union leaders opine that GM wants to lock in favorable work rules and labor costs before it begins construction on a major expansion of the factory, which has about 2,700 employees.
The CAW says it will seek a deal at Ingersoll that follows the pattern of its national contract with GM last autumn. That pact froze base wages and set lower starting pay for new hires. But the agreement doesn't cover the Ingersoll plant, a former GM joint venture with Suzuki Motor Corp.
The facility, which makes the Equinox and its GMC Terrain sibling, produced 305,400 vehicles last year operating on three shifts with overtime.
