General Motors Co. is opening a new active-safety test center at its Milford, Mich., Proving Ground.

Spread across 52 acres, the $14 million complex allows the automaker to test emerging technologies in simulated real world conditions. The site includes a large area to test self-driving vehicles on various road types, surrounding infrastructure and conditions.

There also is a six-lane simulated highway with on/off ramps, controlled lighting and road signs. Other features include a simulated tunnel, indoor testing, traffic intersections, parking lots, mechanical pedestrians and other obstacles.

GM plans to use the facility to assess performance against global regulations and independent standards and metrics. The company says the center also is ideal for testing vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems.
