General Motors Co. idled its Fairfax, Kan., assembly plant last week and won't restart production until Jan. 7 because of a glut of the Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedans built there, Automotive News reports.
The newspaper says GM has a 164-day supply of the Malibu more than twice the ideal inventory level. The company said earlier this month it would make unspecified reductions to North American output because of bloated stockpiles of a number of models.
The suspension of production at the Kansas factory, which covers the factory's planned holiday downtime, eliminates about 13 days of scheduled output. That facility also makes the Buick LaCrosse sedan.
AN says GM also has canceled some shifts at the Lordstown, Ohio, plant that produces the slow-selling Chevrolet Cruze compact car.
