General Motors Co. and IBM Watson are collaborating to introduce a new version of GM’s 20-year-old OnStar connectivity service that tailors location-based interactions between the user and a variety of entertainment, hospitality, restaurant, fuel and retail services.
The system, dubbed OnStar Go, will debut in the U.S. early next year. It will tap IBM Watson’s cognitive learning software to learn the driver’s preferences and look for patterns of behavior.
The new cognitive mobility platform was developed primarily by IBM iX, which also is working with OnStar on the service’s new touchscreen interface. Among the initial services to be linked to OnStar Go are:
- Glympse, a location-sharing service that connects consumers with businesses near them
- Parkopedia, a parking spot locator that also handles reservations and payments
- An ExxonMobil service station finder
- iHeartRadio, which gathers personalized talk, music and localized content from radio stations across the U.S.
- A Mastercard-enabled system that allows a car’s occupants to pay for goods and service from within the vehicle
