General Motors Co. has completed a $20 million project to triple the size of its Global Battery Systems Laboratory in Warren, Mich., to 85,000 sq ft.

The facility tests and validates battery cells and packs for all GM vehicle electrification equipment, including the battery systems for the Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac ELR, Chevrolet Spark EV and GM eAssist.

The lab now has 112 testing channels for batteries, up from 64, and 120 cell-level test channels, up from 96. GM says the expansion makes the facility the largest manufacturer-owned battery development lab in North America.

GM also operates battery labs in Shanghai and Mainz-Kastel, Germany. All three facilities work around the clock to reduce validation time.
