General Motors Co. is extending its 5-month-old Maven car-sharing service to Boston, Chicago and Washington, D.C.

GM began testing the app-based option in January in Ann Arbor, Mich., Chicago and New York City. The company says users already have accumulated more than 1 million miles driving Buick, Cadillac and Chevrolet vehicles they rent by the hour or day.

Previously existing GM car-share services in Berlin and Frankfurt, Germany, also have been grouped under the Maven brand. GM has expanded the service in Chicago, plans to introduce it next month in Washington and will launch it later this summer in Boston.

Users pay an hourly fee that covers fuel and insurance. A smartphone-based app enables them to unlock and start the car they rent.
