General Motors Co. has expanded its special short-term rental plan for Lyft Inc. ride-hailing service drivers to California and Colorado.
GM and Lyft launched the program, called Express Drive, in Chicago in March and soon expanded it to Baltimore, Boston and Washington, D.C. The plan enables Lyft’s independent drivers to rent a new GM vehicle, including insurance and maintenance, for $99 or less per week.
The expanded program adds the option to renting a 2016 Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid or 2017 Chevy Bolt electric sedan. Express Drive also offers the Chevy Equinox crossover.
GM says the offer has been very well received, noting that 30% of Lyft driver applicants in Chicago have requested an Express Drive vehicle. The companies note that 60,000 people in Chicago previously had applied to become Lyft drivers but lack a car that qualified.
