Germany’s transport ministry claims it has discovered a new “defeat device” designed to evade diesel emission tests.
The ministry offered no details but say it will send a report to the European Commission. Der Spiegel cites an investigation by Germany’s KBA vehicle authority that says the diesel in a Fiat 500X car it tested switched off its emission controls 90 minutes after completing a 20-minute certification test.
Last May Bild reported that KBA had uncovered software that disabled emission controls about two minutes after the end of an emission test. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV insists its diesels meet all European emission standards.
The ministries in Italy and Germany have been swapping jabs about Fiat’s diesels for months. In January Italy’s transport ministry cleared Fiat of claims that its cars use defeat devices. Emission standards applied across the EU are enforced by the home state regulators for manufacturers.
