France is launching a formal investigation into Volkswagen AG’s admission that it manipulated 8.5 million diesels sold in Europe to cheat emission standards.
French prosecutors began a preliminary probe in October that included raids on VW offices in the country. The formal investigation is looking at charges of aggravated fraud, Reuters reports.
VW says its sold 946,100 diesels from its family of 4-cylinder “EA 189” engines in France that were loaded with software designed to evade emission limits.
