Prosecutors in France have begun a formal investigation into possible cheating by PSA Group on diesel emissions, sources tell Reuters.
In February PSA became the fourth carmaker identified by DGCCRF, France’s consumer watchdog agency, as a possible manipulator of emission rules. The other companies turned over to prosecutors for possible legal action are Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Renault and Volkswagen. DGCCRF separately cleared Opel of any wrongdoing.
Last month prosecutors also began a formal investigation into FCA for “aggravated cheating” after DGCCRF announced it had uncovered “evidence of deception.”
Like FCA, PSA insists its diesels comply with EU test procedures. Those protocols allow emission control systems to reduce operations under certain conditions to protect the engine, and critics say some carmakers have abused that exception.
