Drive.ai, a Mountain View, Calif.-based startup company specializing in artificial intelligence systems for self-driving cars, has appointed former General Motors Co. executive Steve Girsky to its board of directors.

Girsky, a Wall Street advisor who joined GM amid the 2009 financial crisis, retired from the carmaker in July. During a 7-year tenure, he served as the company’s vice chairman, interim president of GM Europe and chairman of its Adam Opel unit.

Drive.ai was formed last year by several Stanford University researchers. It recently received approval to test its self-driving car technology on public roads in California.

The company aims to combine advanced artificial intelligence and off-the-shelf hardware in retrofit kits that can be installed on a variety of vehicles from different carmakers. In addition to vehicle control systems, the kits could include roof-mounted screens that display messages to pedestrians and other motorists, such as signaling the right-of-way to cross a street.
