Ford and Toyota have joined BMW and General Motors in suspending some assembly operations in South Africa because strikes have disrupted parts supplies.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa wants annual pay increases of at least 10%. The country's employer group reportedly has offered a three-year package that includes raises of 10% this year, 9.5% in 2015 and 9% in 2016.
NUMSA's strikes are targeting the steel and engineering sectors, which supply the automotive, telecom and mining industries.
