Ford Motor Co. says it will being importing its Ranger midsize pickup truck to China next year in a bid to test general consumer demand for such vehicles.
Pickup trucks currently account for less than 2% of the Chinese passenger car market, where such vehicles have been perceived as lacking in modern features and comforts. But Ford notes that China has been easing restrictions on the use of pickups in city centers. The company perceives the potential to develop a market for trucks as passenger vehicles, as is the case in the U.S.
Ford introduced the Ranger in 1982 as a small pickup for the American market. It dropped the truck in the U.S. in 2011 but confirmed in January it will reintroduce the next-generation model there when local production begins in late 2018. The truck currently is assembled in Argentina, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam.
