Ford Motor Co. says it will stop making Focus small sedans and C-Max hybrid small MPVs at its Michigan Assembly Plant in 2018.

The factory is expected to shift production of the two models to another country such as Mexico and replace them at the Michigan plant with one or more new models. Ford currently makes the Focus in nine factories. The car is due for a major overhaul in 2018.

Analysts say phasing out Focus production in the U.S. suggests the company believes America's waning interest in small fuel-efficient cars will continue. Focus and C-Max sales in the first half of 2015 fell 3% and 17%, respectively, according to Autodata Corp.
