Ford Launches Two Automated-Driving Projects
Ford Motor Co., which last month unveiled a self-driving Fusion hybrid test vehicle, aims to extend the capabilities of the car through two research efforts with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

Ford Motor Co., which last month unveiled a self-driving Fusion hybrid test vehicle, aims to extend the capabilities of the car through two research efforts with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.
The MIT project will develop algorithms that enable its LIDAR-equipped car to predict where pedestrians and moving traffic near it will be in the future. The goal is to help the vehicle sense surrounding risks and determine a safe path.
At Stanford, Ford will attempt to develop sensors that can see around obstacles, such as a large truck ahead. Such technology would enable the car to know whether it could safety change lanes if, for example, the truck suddenly braked.
Ford says both projects will help provide tomorrow's vehicles with driver-like common sense and intuition.
