Ford Motor Co.’s new assembly facility near Lagos, Nigeria, has begun making Ford Ranger compact pickup trucks from kits imported from South Africa.
The factory, which Ford announced in August, will initially build 10 vehicles per day. It has annual capacity to make 5,000 trucks, all of which will be sold in Nigeria.
The facility is Ford’s first on the continent outside South Africa and was launched in partnership with Ford dealer Coscharis Motors Ltd. At peak volume, it will create about 180 direct and indirect jobs, according to Ford.
The company tells Reuters local assembly will reduce delivery time for an ordered truck to 1-2 months from 4-6 months for an imported model. Ford builds about 85,000 Rangers per year in South Africa, and markets them in 24 African countries.
