Ford Motor Co. begins production today at its fourth assembly plant in China. The factory in Hangzhou will produce Edge crossover vehicles.
With the ability to make 250,000 vehicles per year, the $760 million facility boosts Ford's annual production capacity in China to 1.4 million passenger vehicles. The increase makes Ford the fourth-ranked foreign carmaker in China after Volkswagen, General Motors and Nissan. Hyundai, with 1.1 million units of annual capacity, drops to fifth.
Ford sales in China grew 19% to 1.1 million units in 2014. Deliveries are up 15% this year, nearly twice the growth rate of the passenger-car market overall, according to the China Assn. of Automobile Manufacturers.
